Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes album review
Review submitted by The Den 25th June 2011
Rating: (** 2.5 stars)
Fleet Foxes came from obscurity
two years ago to debut which many people (me included) with the best
album of the year. This folkie band from Seattle masterminded by Robin
Pecknold has made a good second record but when the smoke has cleared it
comes up a little short of it's predecessor. When the standard is set so
high it takes a great album to get a good pass, and unfortunately this
aint great enough.
Maybe it's me but I get the feeling they have tried a little bit too
much, trying too hard to be too clever here. Those who enjoyed their
first record don't need to be impressed - we already know that.
Pecknold's vocals are great but the songs are in some cases far too busy
and bloated, which is a shame as a more stripped-back approach may have
made this more accessable. The best tracks here are "Battery Kinzie'
and "Lorelei".
Final Word: This record suffers from the medical ailment SAS
(Second Album Syndrome).
